If you ride in an arena, whether indoor or outdoor, there is a set of rules you should follow to avoid upsetting other riders. Obviously these rules are followed more strictly in large commercial indoor arenas and might be unheard of in a paddock arena marked out with car tyres. Particular Equestrian Centres may have their own specific rules to add to these general rules (for example, whether lunging is allowed), so ask for a copy when you first ride there.

  1. If the arena is in use, call 'Gate Free'. When the senior rider answers 'Yes' or 'Gate Free', enter quickly through a gate when the way is clear.
  2. When entering the arena, riders must lead horses into the centre.
  3. Mount and dismount in the centre of the arena.
  4. Riders must pass left shoulder to left shoulder.
  5. If you are riding at a walk, use the inside track.
  6. If there are more than two riders, halts, rein-back, lateral movements, etc, should be
    practised on the inside track.
  7. Unless you are instructing, keep spoken commands to a minimum and speak quietly.
  8. If you are permitted to use the arena while a lesson is in progress, do not interfere in any way with the lesson.
  9. Riders of horses not under control must leave the arena at the request of other riders.
  10. When four of more riders are working in an arena be co-operative. Riders should work on the same lead (direction). The senior rider (in terms of experience not age) is usually responsible for changes in direction.
  11. When leaving the arena, dismount in the centre and ask 'Gate Free' and wait until the way is clear to leave.
