QUALIFICATIONS & ASSOCIATIONSThere is no legal requirement in Australia for a farrier to be registered before commercially shoeing horses (as there is in England). In terms of education, a farrier can either have carried out a trade certificate course, have been apprenticed to a qualified farrier, have learnt the trade from another unqualified farrier or be self taught. In 1996, National Competency Standards will be introduced in every state and then all farriers will be required to be trained according to a national curriculum and tested to that standard before a trade certificate is issued. This will, however, only happen in the ACT if the Government formally recognises farriery as a trade. Farriers who shoe racehorses and who wish to participate in the sharing of the 'Plate Prize' after a win, must be registered with the Master Farriers Association. Farriers who are registered with the Association are entitled to call themselves 'Master Farriers'. The Master Farriers Association can be contacted through: Master Farriers Association Recently, a branch of the Australian Farriers and Blacksmiths Association was formed in the ACT. The aim of the Branch is to improve the education of farriers and blacksmiths, and horse owners. They are also aiming to encourage farriers who are not formally qualified to complete trade certificates, and to have the ACT Government formally recognised farriery as a trade for which practitioners must be qualified. There is no farriery trade course in the ACT and apprentices must complete a trade certificate in NSW and be issued a licence by the Vocational Training Commission.
