There are a number of large pine forests around Canberra which are extremely suitable for horse riding. Pine forests in the ACT are managed by the Forests Section of the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, the corporate name of which is ACT Forests.

ACT Forests is keen to assist riders in using the forests and is currently improving access to some of the forests which have previously been unavailable for riding.' Those currently open for riding include: Kowen, Stromlo, Uriarra, and Pierces Creek. Blue Range, Woods Reserve and Laurel Camp forests are closed but access may be gained through an application to ACT Forests.

A very informative and useful pamphlet entitled A Guide to ACT Pine Forests can be obtained from ACT Forests. It covers Uriarra, Kowen, Pierces Creek and Stromlo Forests and, as well as detailed maps, provides information on history, camping sites, huts, trails, picnic areas, car parks and areas of restricted access.

If you plan to camp overnight in an ACT Forest or to hold an event in one, you or your organisation will need to apply for permission to do so. Fees are as follows: $20 where joint but and campsite are booked together; no fee for single night but bookings, $20 per night for consecutive night bookings; maximum but bookings are one night in school holidays. Application forms can be obtained from:
